Move out of your comfort zone

“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” Brian Tracy
In the past few years I have found it very important to do things out of my comfort zone. One area that has always been difficult---public speaking. I just never had the confidence so I decided to join Toastmasters. Now I very much enjoy speaking to groups. Currently I have been on a Speakers’ Bureau for the Hy-Vee Triathlon. We talk to breakfast clubs, Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs… It has been a lot of fun promoting this huge event. Speaking of the Triathlon, which is only a few weeks away, I have another out-of-my-comfort-zone activity. About a month ago, a running partner at work decided to put a relay team together. Somehow I agreed to do the swim portion. What was I thinking? I’m a runner not a swimmer! Swimming is totally out of my comfort zone. So I now have a borrowed wet suit that lays next to my dresser just waiting for me to squeeze into it. We live on a lake, so every morning and night to and from work, I am reminded of this huge endeavor. I need to practice! So I’m setting some goals. This week I need to do two 30 minute workouts in the Lake. Next week—1 pool workout and one 45 minute Lake session. The week of the Triathlon, two 1 hour lake workouts. So girls, I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone. Is it time to do that first 5K, ½ marathon, full marathon or a triathlon? Be brave. Set that goal. Hold yourself to it. Doing something out of your comfort zone is very scary but I guarantee the results are worth it!
So girls, I have 2 questions. #1 Have you done something out of your comfort zone and how was the experience? #2 Does anyone have a solution for stinking? I am a stinker! After I workout the body odor is unreal! Help!

My husband is in Toastmasters and he loves it. He loves to see people like you come in with this fear and anxiety of speaking and within a couple speeches they are a whole new person standing in front of everyone. He's seen some amazing things, from people who have lisp or studder and they have over come that with the help of Toastmasters. I hope you enjoy the experience. My "out of the comfort zone" is starting to run at all. I've never been much of a runner, in fact in middle school I quite playing soccer because I hated to run. But after some convincing of a friend I decided to try it. It's nice to have some support base and have a goal to work for. I hope to run my first 5k this summer and maybe even try a 1/2 by this fall. It's something no one would expect me to do so I really want to make my goal.
I was outside of my comfort zone last weekend at my first race. I have only just recently started to run and I am really enjoying the challenge. I signed up for the race because I thought it would be fun "togetherness" time with my husband, but I had no idea what I was getting into. I'm used to running through our quiet neighborhood with no one but the dog around. Running in a huge race with thousands of runners who were much better and faster than me was an amazing "out of my comfort zone" experience. It was exciting and it made me even more determined to be better and faster. I love the personal challenge and satisfaction that comes from running against myself - it was out of my comfort zone to run against other people. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything, though, and I'm looking forward to my next race!
Stacey,
Congratulations....You have been officially bitten by the running bug! How about signing up for MORE Magazine's Half Marathon next March in New York City? Thousands of women walking, running, or a little bit of both....hope to see you there!
I'm outside my comfort zone everyday! I'm 33years old and about 90 pounds overweight. I'm running my first 5k on 9/16 and have been working towards this goal since April. I'm so nervous!! :)
About being stinky... have you tried dressing in high tech fabrics from head to toe? They break down after time, so to prolong their anti-stinky qualities - keep them out of the dryer. Cotton is the worst for odors.
